Three Types of Mold Tests

12/8/2020 (Permalink)

If you believe you have mold in your place of business then you may have contacted an Austin, TX, industrial hygienist to perform a mold test. Depending on the type of mold being analyzed, they may have performed one of three different mold tests. Here’s what you need to know about each of them.

Surface Test

If your business has visible mold, in many cases testing may not be necessary. However, the surface test is helpful during the following instances.

  • Early stages when mold is unidentifiable
  • The substance may be something other than mold growth
  • When checking other areas for contamination
  • After cleaning to ensure no mold remains

A mold remediation professional will know when to use this test and what areas should be examined.

Air Test

Air tests calculate the amount of, if any, mold spores present in the air. This test is typically used when mold is suspected but not yet visible. This type of test may also show ventilation or moisture issues which could contribute to a mold problem.

Bulk Test

Mold inspectors may also use the bulk test. Most commonly used when looking for possible hidden contaminants this testing involves taking a sample of the material itself. It is used to determine if mold is growing on a surface, and how far the mold has penetrated the material.

An industrial hygienist can use testing to determine if, and what type of, mold may be in your company building. The results of these tests can allow you to take appropriate steps to remedy the situation.

Local and state laws may require a specific inspection and documentation protocol based on the size of the affected area. SERVPRO of Lakeway / Westlake can advise you on this process, providing guidance based on your unique situation.
